"Carat" is a measure of a diamond's weight and not its size. It is possible for two diamonds of the same weight to not be of equal size. Furthermore, two diamonds of equal weight can have very different values, depending on their grades for cut, colour and clarity.
Just as a dollar is divided into 100 pennies, a carat is divided into 100 points. For example, a 50-point diamond weighs 0.50 carats. Because even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost, precision is crucial. In the diamond industry, weight is often measured to the hundred thousandths of a carat, and rounded to a hundredth of a carat.
Since carat weight alone does not accurately reflect a diamond's size, it is important to consider the carat weight along with the diamond's measurements and cut grade.
For example, the diamond weight could be hide in the base of the diamond (pavilion) and by that diamond will look smaller seeing it from the top. To make sure that the weight of the diamond is distributed correctly it's very important to choose the right cut.
Since we look at the face-up of the diamond it will be easier to see the right cut using the measurements of the diamond.
